Where to Find ‘Happiness’?
We often worry about How and Where to find happiness, so we continuously plan our lives by setting targets. We do get a glimpse of merriness, once we achieve these targets but it lasts for a fraction of time then it fades away, and the entire chase starts all over again.
In this whole process of setting and achieving goals, we never observe one thing, the merriment we derive always relies on external factors which makes it so temporary. We overlook the very fact that the pleasure that we experience by meeting our goals is self-generated. It’s we who set these goals, and it’s we who rejoice and celebrate by fulfilling them. So, all this while the thing you were chasing out was within you and was always accessible to you in the form of your inner happiness.
‘Inner happiness’ is unbound, limitless, free from expectations, isn’t dependent on others and is far beyond the definition of the human mind. It cannot vanish and can never be curtailed or suppressed. Nobody can take it away from you. No one can jinx or destroy it.
Happiness isn’t dependent on external factors. It’s not out but within you.
How to Find ‘Happiness’?
I hope by now, you know Where to find happiness. So, now let’s turn to, How to achieve this state of ‘Eternal bliss’-
SET AN INTENTION TO BE HAPPY
The first and foremost thing to keep in mind is that happiness is a state of mind and is our choice, and one needs to opt for it deliberately. Our attitude and strong desire attract joy in our lives. The problem with most of us is, we like self-pity and love to play the role of victim, and so we never choose happiness. Our intention isn’t to experience that inner bliss but to seek attention by continuously discussing our never-ending problems. Instead of pondering on the problems of life, let’s just set our intention to be happy and gradually making it our habit.
TAKE OWNERSHIP OF LIFE
We love to be at the mercy of destiny because it’s easy to shift the blame for the failures on something that is not in our control, ultimately, resting the ownership of our lives on the external source, object, person, event or achievement. We are happy today because of this foreign source but will be sad tomorrow when that stimuli no longer exists or no longer meets our expectations. But our happiness won’t vanish if the same is self-generated. There won’t be any fear of losing it. We will be able to enjoy that eternal bliss to its utmost, anytime, anywhere by taking ownership of our lives and the circumstances.
PRACTICE GRATITUDE
Gratitude is the best attitude. When we start being grateful for the little things we have in our lives, our focus shifts from an ever complaining cynical approach to a high vibration positive approach. While practising gratitude, we see life through a rosy lens that changes our perspective towards life. Gradually, we start attracting abundance, and our problems grow smaller and smaller day by day. We look at life from a broader perspective which ultimately draws more happiness and abundance into our lives.
REMOVE SELF-GENERATED BLOCKAGES
We live in chains, we live in congestion, and then we yearn for that inner happiness. We won’t be able to achieve the same till we remove our blockages until we free ourselves from our judgments and notions. Every time we pass judgment, unknowingly, we create a new stoppage for ourselves which hinders our performance because we think others will also judge us the same way as we judge them. We need to free ourselves from the chains of these judgments and blockages and access that everlasting, ever-flowing happiness that is within us.
PRACTICE SELF-ACCEPTANCE
We substantiate our existence from others and seek their approval and acceptance. If others accept us, our thoughts, we get happiness. This happiness is a mirage and will vanish soon. As we are relying on other’s validation, and it’s always tough to please others. Also, in the process, we fake our true identity and will lose our individuality. The more we lose ourselves, the more we are drawn away from inner happiness.
CONNECT WITH INNER-SELF
By connecting with our inner soul we experience that infinite bliss and peace which is ours and will be with us forever. We can regenerate our bond with ourselves through witnessing the vastness of nature, meditation, journalizing and solitude.
Hotei, a Zen master, who was known to people as ‘The Laughing Buddha’ used to laugh continuously. But sometimes he would sit under a tree with closed eyes, not laughing, not even smiling; completely calm and collected. Somebody asked: “You are not laughing, Hotei?” He opened his eyes and said, “I am preparing.” The questioner couldn’t understand and said, “What do you mean by ‘preparing’?” Hotei said, “I have to prepare myself for laughter, have to go within. I have to forget the whole world so that I can come rejuvenated and can laugh again.”
Happiness depends upon ourselves. – Aristotle
